In recent times, Cambodia has become very active in ecological development across the country. The organization "GoGreen Cambodia", which works for waste collection and environmental sustainability, serves as a perfect example.
Based in Phnom Penh, GoGreen Cambodia first started by seeking volunteers on social media for cleanup campaigns in 2016. Since then, the organization has expanded throughout the country, including Siem Reap, and has evolved into a national project for environmental protection and striving to provide alternatives to Cambodia's waste management problems.
Online Campaigns
GoGreen Cambodia has used its Facebook group to share information, organize clean-up days, and spread messages to raise awareness about the consequences of waste pollution.
Volunteers share environmentally-friendly initiatives, including "plastic-free" workshops, sustainability seminars, and waste collection activities in various regions of Cambodia.
Green Partnership
Since its creation, GoGreen Cambodia has developed a growing network of partnerships throughout the country. It partners with businesses by developing tailor-made programs that offer environmentally friendly and cost-effective waste management solutions.
The organization has several projects to raise awareness about plastic pollution in schools and has recently formed a working group with representatives from the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Education to develop environmental tools to integrate into the curriculum.
Actions and Projects
The association organizes various clean-up days, including special events such as Khmer New Year, Water Festival, Earth Day and World Clean-up Day.
Recently, they have begun to provide technological tools for citizens to engage in community cleanup and environmental awareness campaigns. In partnership with the Ministries of Environment and Tourism, their mobile app "GoGreen" generates real-time data to create a large map of areas where waste management needs to be improved.
One of the association's events was to organize Cambodia's first "green” run, in which about 100 runners ran around Phnom Penh collecting plastics and metals to clean the streets. Participants ran, stopped, cleaned, and dropped off entire bags of garbage using the GoGreen app.
Phoenix Voyages' Involvement in Waste Collection
On February 4, 2023, Phoenix Voyages and our partner SDPO co-organized the Angkor Ultra-Trail, a unique race in the heart of the archaeological site of Siem Reap. After the success of the event, our team in Cambodia cleaned up the roads and paths run by the participants in order to support the active environmental sustainability mission in the whole country.
We are also pleased to announce that the 7th edition of the Ultra-Trail of Angkor will take place on January 27 and 28, 2024!
