Hong Kong and Macau: Cantonese and Patua
Heung Gong Yuet Yu (香港粤语), or “Hong Kong Cantonese”, is a thousand-year-old language from Guangdong province in southern China.
In Hong Kong, Cantonese is written in traditional Chinese characters and is distinct from Mandarin or other Chinese dialects.
While Cantonese is also spoken in Macau, the city's historic language remains Patuá, a unique creole born in the XVIᵉ century under Portuguese influence. It is a blend of Portuguese, Cantonese, Malay and other local languages.
